Rahman's Work in KaaviyaThalaivan is very important : Dir Vasantabalan

Kaaviya Thalaivan's music composed by Oscar-winning AR Rahman is very important as it plays a pivotal role in the film, says its director Vasanthabalan.

He says the project was a challenge for the Mozart of Madras as well. Kaaviya Thalaivan, which releases in cinemas Friday, is the story of a group of musical theatre artists in the 1930s and 1940s.

"The reason we approached Rahman sir is because music drives the story in our film. We wanted someone who could promise us great music.

Rahman sir spent nearly two years to give the kind of music, which plays a vital role in the story," said Vasanthabalan.

"Even for Rahman sir, this project
was challenging as he hasn't worked on something like this before. He even gave us most of the songs even before we went on floors with the film, contrary to how he usually works on a project," he said.

According to Rahman, Kaaviya
Thalaivan allowed him to innovate
with music.

"I haven't got the opportunity to
compose folk music for films very
often. This project gave me the
freedom to innovate with that genre of music. I had to forego a Hollywood project to take out time for this film to compose 20 songs," Rahman had said earlier.

"Since it's a period film, I had to
use a lot of folk tunes laced with
ragas to do justice to the era in
which the film is shot," Rahman
said.

பெண் : சிற்றின்பம் தாண்டிப்
பேரின்பம் கொள்வோம்
உயிர் தீண்டியே நாம்

A R Rahman Doesn't Give His Singers "Time to Get Nervous" - Nikhita Gandhi

When I walked into his studio to record Ladio, I experienced the 'Oh my god!' moment, but it lasted only for seconds because he doesn't give his singers the time to get nervous," Nikhita said

Playback singer Nikhita Gandhi, who has crooned her first title track for AR Rahman in the upcoming Tamil magnum opus I, says the double Oscar winning composer never lets his singers get nervous.

Nikhita's song Ladio is already a chartbuster.

"I've recorded with Rahman sir in the past, but this was my first title track. When I walked into his studio to record Ladio, I experienced the 'Oh my god!' moment, but it lasted only for seconds because he doesn't give his singers the time to get nervous," Nikhita told IANS.

She has also crooned to Mr Rahman's tunes in films such as Jab Tak Hain Jaan and Raanjhanaa.

"I'm sure one of the challenges for Rahman sir must be dealing with people who get nervous when they come to record with him. But you feel so comfortable around him and he never makes you feel that he's a celebrity," she said.

Nikhita, who's half Bengali and half Punjabi, recorded the song in four hours.

"The biggest challenge was the language, but thanks to the lyricist Madhan Karky, I didn't have to struggle to learn the song. The whole recording process only took us about four hours. We took about one hour to get familiarised with the lyrics and then we recorded the song," she added.

She wrote the song in Hindi and recorded it.

A former student of Rahman's KM College of Music and Technology, Nikhita's first association with Mr Rahman was during the Indo-German exchange.

"I was part of the choir which performed with German orchestra during the exchange program few years back. Rahman sir then heard me individually and auditioned me for a project called Qyuki with Shekhar Kapur," she said.

Nikhita, who recently cut her debut album in Bengali titled Kotha, is also part of a Sufi band called Noor, and is a trained Odissi dancer as well.

She was one of the vocalists of the Tamil song Modern Kalyanam from Tamil adult comedy Kalyana Samayal Saadham.

I learn from everyone : A R Rahman

A R Rahman was at his candid best while interacting with the
students at Berklee College of Music, where he was bestowed with a honorary doctorate in music for his contribution to the field over the years. Talking about his curiosity to leave everyday, Rahman confessed that he kept pushing himself throughout his career. "Learning should never stop...My mindset was never that I was going to be a permanent film composer. I always thought, 'Okay, this is the last one, and then I'll go.' I don't know where I would go, but that feeling of liberation—that I could leave—was great until 2007, when [film work] consumed me. And that's one of the reasons that I switched over in my prime to do [the musical theater production] Bombay Dreams with Andrew Lloyd Webber, which was a huge step for Indian music abroad," he said

Berklee Indian Ensemble perform A. R. Rahman's "Jiya Jale"

A.R. Rahman Receives Honorary Doctorate from Berklee College of Music

Musical genius A.R. Rahman will be conferred an honorary
Doctorate by the prestigious Berklee College of Music, Boston
(Oct 24) at a glittering event.

In recognition of his two decade-long musical legacy, the double
Oscar and Grammy winner, best known for his original scores and
songs from movies like Slumdog Millionaire, 127 Hours, etc.

The Golden Age and Million Dollar Arm, Rahman will receive the
honour where the students and faculty will perform songs, paying
tribute to his memorable compositions. Reportedly, Rahman will
also join them for select pieces.

In honour of Rahman’s new relationship with Berklee, the college
will establish a scholarship in his name to help bring in students
from India. All proceeds from the October concert will go toward
this scholarship fund, the college statement reads. In addition to his
performance, Rahman will conduct a master class at the Berklee
Performance Centre.

“I’m deeply moved to receive an honorary doctorate from such a
distinguished school which has contributed so much to the worldof
music,” Rahman said earlier. “I’m especially proud and honoured
that the college is graciously establishing a scholarship in my name
for future generations of musicians to follow their dreams,” he
added.

Rahman’s visit comes in conjunction with the Berklee India
Exchange, a new endeavour, aiming to connect Berklee students of
all nationalities with successful players in the Indian entertainment
industry.

Berklee College of Music President Roger H Brown had said, “A
friend from India described A. R. Rahman to me as John Williams
and Sting rolled in one a leading film composer and a wildly
popular, brilliant songwriter and performer. We welcome him to
Berklee, where the college and our students look forward to paying
our respects.”

When guitarist Prasanna applied to attend Berklee in 1993, he
asked none other than A. R. Rahman to write him a letter of
reference. Rahman agreed, and the letter “is a lovely memory for
me now”, recalls Prasanna.

A 60-piece Berklee student and faculty ensemble will honour
Rahman’s two-decade-long musical legacy, which not only
includes distinguished soundtracks and film scores, but also
compositions for the 2012 Olympic Games and collaborations with
iconic artistes like Mick Jagger, Michael Bolton, Andrew Lloyd
Webber and Will.i.am.

Fusion Touch
The Jiya Jale number from ARR’s film, Dil Se, which starts with
its Tamil lyrics, Nenjinile Nenjinile from the Tamil version, Uyire,
with a fusion of several musical instruments was performed by the
Berklee Indian Ensemble.

This video, in gratitude to Rahman’s contribution to the music
world, has been trending on YouTube. Touched by their gesture,
Rahman wrote on his microblog recently as follows, ‘Immensely
talented students as part of the Berklee Indian Ensemble
performing one of my songs’.

AR Rahman Prefers Lip-Syncing to Songs in Background

COMPOSER AR RAHMAN DOESN'T FAVOUR THE TREND OF USING SONGS IN THE            BACKGROUND BECAUSE HE FEELS IT AFFECTS THEIR POPULARITY.

AR Rahman says lip-sync affects a song's popularity

Composer AR Rahman doesn't favour the trend of using songs in the background because he feels it affects their popularity.

In the 1970s filmmaker Basu Chatterjee would often force his songs into the background and some of the current directors like Shoojit Sircar and Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra feel the same and avoid lip-syncing of songs in their films.

But Mr Rahman begs to differ.

"A lot of my very good songs in films like Rang De Basanti and Delhi 6 were used as soundtracks in the background. They were not used as lip-sync. So the reach of those songs was just 30 or 40 percent of what it was meant to be," said the composer.

"Songs that are sung by major stars on screen get played in clubs and on radio. They make a psychological impact on the audiences' mind," he added.

The Oscar-winning composer is looking for a more prominent outlet for his creativity.

"One reason why I want to do music in young stories is because these films allow their actors to sing on screen," he said.

A R Rahman scores music for Ashutosh Gowariker's debut TV show

After the success of 'Lagaan' and 'Jodha Akbar', A R Rahmanhas teamed up with AshutoshGowariker for the director's debut television show titled 'Everest'.

Rahman said that it was a privilege to work on the Star Plus show with Gowariker, whose first look was launched yesterday.
"I have worked with Ashutosh earlier and it was a great experience. He has given me a brief for the show and I have already composed the title track for 'Everest'.

AR Rahman and Ashutosh Gowariker at STAR Plus EVEREST announcement

"Ashutosh came to me with a concept, which was so intriguing and
beautiful. He has briefed me about 12 characters. In fact, we finished the theme song three days back. We have tried to make it very orchestral," he added.

Music maestro A.R. Rahman, who acted in TV show "Wonder Balloon" in 1980, is back on television, but this time as a composer for Ashutosh Gowariker's show "EVEREST". He says in the last 34 years, the medium has become very big.

"I started with 'Wonder Balloon'. Since then, television has changed a lot. It has become so big... It has high-definition now," the Oscar-winning composer said here Tuesday at the promo and poster launch of "EVEREST".

AR Rahman To Perform In Boston On Oct 24

After taking music aficionados in the US by storm in 2010, with Jai Ho Concert, A R Rahman will be performing at Berklee College of Music, Boston on October 24. The Academy Award winner will also be conferred with a honorary doctorate by the college on the same day. Interestingly, the music college is going to establish a scholarship in A R Rahman's name for future generations of musicians.

As part of the promotions for the concert, the organisers spoke to several students from various countries about what their favourite A R Rahman's song and the wide range of songs, which the students have revealed, is simply mind-boggling. From his work in Bombay Dreams, to Vinnaithaandi Varuvayaa, it was quite evident that the students at Berklee were well aware of the music composer's body of work. More details about the event will be revealed soon. Meanwhile, Rahman is ruling the music charts in Tamil with his work for Shankar's I and Vasantha Balan's Kaaviya Thalaivan.

Hans Zimmer talks about A R Rahman at Zurich Film Festiva

We have an exclusive from the Zurich Film Festival which took

place last week. Ashanti Omkar, who has her own show on the

BBC Asian Network, from 2-4pm every Sunday, beginning this

Diwali, on 26th October 2014, and also is the Indian cinema expert for BBC London and BBC West Midlands, and speaks as a film expert on Monocle 24 radio was there to cover the prestigious festival. Along with the many premieres and special screenings of some of the best films from the world over, acclaimed and award winning composer Hans Zimmer was given a lifetime achievement award at this festival in Switzerland. Ashanti shared with us some highlights of what the world famous composer had to say about another world famous maestro AR Rahman.

Zurich film festival roundtable with international media, from Europe
“I have friends in India. AR Rahman (and he pronounces the name perfectly). I had this idea a few years ago, to reinvent the music of the Oscars. It was one of the worst ideas I ever had (laughs). But I go all my friends, like I got AR to come and play in the orchestra and I got everybody to get involved. I love him. I don’t think that I even need to say that he is talented, I think we all know that he is. He’s my strongest connection to India. That’s the great thing, because we musicians, even where I’ve worked in countries where I didn’t speak or understand the language, where you have a translator, then you just sit down and start playing. 4 hours later, you’re still playing and you’re having the greatest conversation. So we musicians have a bonding thing.”

Zurich film festival, 10th anniversary Green carpet one to one with Ashanti Omkar from UK – Hans Zimmer was given a lifetime achievement award at this festival in Switzerland
“I’d love to do a collaboration with AR Rahman. We’ve actually sort of talked about it. When he first came to Los Angeles, he has his studio in my studio, which was like a safe haven for him I think. And yes, he owe me that I come to India and I park my studio in his for a while (chuckles), and we do a bit of music together. To me, he’s a wonderful man, an extraordinary talent. He is everything you hope a composer would be.”

Why AR Rahman Has Not Render His Voice in KaaviyaThalaivan and I

Kaaviya Thalaivan Director Mr. Vasanta Balan conversation with

A.R.Rahman about I and Kaaviya Thalaivan songs...

Vasanta Balan : Why didn't you render your voice in any

of soundtracks in I or Kaaviya Thalaivan.

A.R.Rahman : There is no compulsion that I should sing in each

movie

Vasanta Balan : But Fans(Rahmaniacs) are expecting that

A.R.Rahman : I am happy If I have given my music properly.

Vasanta Balan : Might be you didn't have space to render your

voice in Kaaviya Thalaivan soundtracks but there is a space in I.

Why didn't use it?

A.R.Rahman :Yeah, I could have sung "Ennodu Nee Irundhal".

But singer Sid Sriram done a great job than me. He didn't

recognize much during Kadal track "Adiye".. This will help him to

go places. I dont want to waste just grabbing his track for my

rendition.

Director Vasanta Balan shared this conversation stating

A.R.Rahman is a great human being.
