Every time Oscar-winning composer AR Rahman takes to singing, he creates a sensation. For instance, his number from the recent Mani Ratnam film OK Kanmani is among the best of the film's track.
Now news is AR Rahman might sing in a composition by his nephew GV Prakash Kumar in upcoming yet-untitled Tamil film starring superstar Vijay.
"Prakash and the team are in talks with Rahman. If everything goes as planned, he might sing in this album. Prakash is keen that Rahman sings as this happens to be his 50th film as a composer," said a source close to the young composer.
The film, which will officially be launched in Chennai on Friday, also features Samantha Ruth Prabhu and Amy Jackson in the lead roles.
To be directed by Atlee, the project is said to feature Vijay as a policeman. The regular shooting will start from July 1.

Why AR Rahman went up in a hot air balloon?

Project Kural Balloon just got bigger. The hot air balloon dedicated to Thirukkural, which is all set to make its debut at the next edition of the Tamil Nadu International Festival in Pollachi, got a major shot in the arm when none other than Academy Award-winner AR Rahman expressed his interest in the project.

The composer, who is in North America for his Intimate tour, took some time out of his hectic schedule and went up in the air on a hot air balloon to understand about the Kural Balloon project. Benedict Savio, the organiser of the fest and the brainchild behind the project, says, "It was wonderful to have AR Rahman coming forward to experience a hot air balloon flight. We took off on a hot air balloon in Las Vegas and spoke to him about the Kural Balloon project and its impending world tour. He was quite excited about a project that would promote Tamil as a language on a global scale. It was really great of Rahman Sir who made this happen despite his tight schedule of concerts throughout North America."

The Kural Balloon will have all the 1,330 Thirukkural couplets printed on it along with the English translation. The balloon will be unveiled in Pollachi on Thiruvalluvar Day (January 26, 2016) and will be taken across countries that have a huge Tamil population. It is a crowd-funded project.

A R Rahman finds new passion in Las Vegas: flying a hot air balloon

ARR
WASHINGTON, DC: Acclaimed composer and singer A.R. Rahman was recently spotted taking his hobbies to new heights as he embarked on a dizzying hot air balloon ride in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Balloon enthusiast Benedict Savio posted the photos of A.R. Rahman and two friends ascending over Sin City as the South Indian maestro, who is widely considered one of the greatest composers of his era, showing Rahman happily snapping selfies.
Rahman is most famous for his contributions to numerous soundtracks in both Bollywood and its western counterpart in Hollywood. “Dil Se,” “Lagaan,” and “Slumdog Millionaire” are all seminal films that Rahman has penned music for, garnering two Academy Awards along the way for “Slumdog Millionaire,” which was recognized for Best Original Score and Best Original Song.
Rahman was the subject of a documentary titled “Jai Ho,” which was named after the song that won him one of his Academy Awards. The film was recently shown at a private screening at the White House that was attended by Rahma.
Directly following the Whtie House screening, Rahman performed at Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts, where he set a new record for the venue.
“Dear fans and music lovers from DC — Together we have set a new record in the history of Wolftrap [sic], Vienna with our concert being the highest grosser ever!” Rahman wrote on Facebook.
Savio runs Skyters, “an exclusive hot air balloon brand.” According to their website, Skyters acts as a consulting company for those “who want to try their hand at ballooning and introduce it as a business/sport in their homeland.” The aviation firm organizes and participate in large-scale ballooning events around the globe.

MALAYALAM/KERALA INFLUENCE IN RAHMAN'S NON-MALAYALAM SONG/MOVIE: Rahman loves to do new experiment in songs and I am spotting it from 1992 to till date. One such experiment is usage of Malayalam/Kerala culture in his non-Malayalam songs...I love these three songs for Rahman's brilliancy in adopting Malayalam flavours and adds beauty to these wonderful composition....

1. Kuluvalele: Muthu: the kerela instruments such as cenda, elathalam along with Malayalam lyrics in interludes adds beauty to this Tamil song...

2. Jiya Chale/Nenjinile:Dil Se: a Malayalam lyrics in prelude 00:13 to 00:46 and interludes 3:12 to 3:47 by MG Sreekumar and chorus is an added flavour...half a page can be written about this song...

3. Aaromale: VTV: a totally unique composition by rahman for a Malayalam lyrics in a Tamil movie... This song is a right example of Rahman new experiment. Whether it is vocal by Alphones Joseph,, bass by Keith, acoustic guitarist - all have rendered their best... It's indeed tough song to sing by a normal singer.

A.R. Rahman Intimate Concert Tour in Los Angeles - Review

AR Rahman latest images

A.R. Rahman brought his Intimate Concert Tour to Los Angeles on June 10 with an energetic, audience-pleasing performance at the newly redubbed Microsoft Theater downtown.
The audience of mostly South Asians had plenty to be happy about with a greatest hits program that included Tamil and Hindi versions of several songs from “Chinna chinna aasai/Choti si asha”  to “Uyire/Dil se.” The newer numbers included songs from this year’s “O kadhal kanmani” and 2014’s “The 100-Foot Journey.”
The evening started with an Urdu devotional number, “Maula mere maula,” which along with “If I Rise” (“127 Hours”) and a Punjabi song were among the few exceptions to Hindi and Tamil tunes that made up the bulk of the program.
Doing the bulk of the singing was a bubbly Jonita Gandhi who dueted with Rahman, as well as Haricharan and Sriram. Anneta Phillip, clad in a red Kancheevaram silk saree, joined a dark glasses-wearing Rahman for a jazz number in perfect scat-singing. Three keyboardists, including Rahman and Phillip, two drummers, a violinist, guitarist and a flautist rounded out the group. At one point Rahman switched from the piano he was playing to an accordion.
For many of the songs a solo dancer performed behind the musicians.
With the exception of a 2011 Hollywood Bowl concert when he performed chamber music, Rahman can be counted on for a fun evening and there were plenty of calls for favorite songs from the audience plus shouts of “I love you” to which he replied, “I love you too.”
Rahman and his drummer also tried out a new device that played like a Wii instrument. The two musicians wore bands on their hands and as they flicked their wrists the laptop below played drums and other instruments. “Musicians love new gadgets,” Rahman said.
The musicians got a chance at solos including competition-like sets called “jugalbandhi.” And the audience, many of whom were on their feet dancing, joined in the chorus for a number of songs such as “Chaiyya chaiyya,” which was among a medley of tunes that rounded off the evening along with “Maa tujhe salaam” and, of course, “Jai Ho,” which earned him an Oscar for “Slumdog Millionaire.”
The North American tour, which ran for almost 2½ hours, continues to San Jose, Vancouver and Redmond, Wash

Edward Maya wants to work with Priyanka Chopra, AR Rahman

AR RAHMAN

Edward says he likes the Hindi films because of Raj Kapoor's emotionally-charged performance and Shah Rukh Khan's versatility.

"I like a very old actor like Raj Kapoor. What I like about Raj Kapoor is his movies. His films have emotional impact. Shah Rukh, on the other hand, has an ability to play different characters, and this is a rare talent and I like him," he said.

"Apart from Indian spirituality and Bollywood music, I like beautiful Indian women. I would like to have a collaboration and meet her (Priyanka Chopra)," said Edward at an interaction after his LIVE Viacom18 event on Saturday.

Maya said he loves Bollywood music more than Hollywood.

"The main difference between Bollywood and Hollywood music is the lyrics and the story behind them. In Europe, US and other countries the lyrics are very short and meaningless, but in Bollywood they have a whole story behind, and this is what I love. You can tell a lot of things in melody through lyrics," he said.

Asked if he understands Hindi lyrics, the Romanian singer said, "I feel the lyrics and I have the translation."

Maya also expressed a desire to work with the double Oscar-winning music composerAR Rahman.

"I would like to work with AR Rahman - he is very talented and a very good professional artiste," he said.

Maya wants to act in romantic-action films as it suits his personality. "I had been an actor but this is another kind of an art.I would like to act if somebody offers me a film. It would be great. I like romance combined with action films because I myself make music mostly on romance. I am a very romantic character," he said.

HE MAY BE ONE OF THE BIGGEST NAMES IN MUSIC THAT YOU MIGHT NOT KNOW

A.R. Rahman may be one of the biggest names in music that you don’t immediately recognize. The Indian composer and musician made his mark on the world scoring soundtracks for films. Time named him one of the world’s most influential people in 2009. Now the artist takes over the 7,000-seat AXIS Theater at Planet Hollywood on Sunday, June 7, one of only 13 stops on his North American tour.
A.R. Rahman: The Intimate Concert Tour marks the composer’s first tour since 2010. He plans to perform works from his 20-year career and make use of that 2,200 square feet of high-definition LED walls at the theater in his show.
Dubbed the “Mozart of Madras” and “Isai Puyal” (Tamal for “musical storm”), Rahman won two Academy Awards for his work on Danny Boyle’s Slumdog Millionaire and another duo of nominations for Boyle’s 127 Hours. Although best known for his Oscar wins, Rahman’s career has included more than 100 films, including RockstarCouples Retreat and The Hundred-Foot Journey.
His latest work has him composing music for the biopic Pele about the Brazilian soccer legend. A new documentary coming out soon called Jai Ho explores his music as well. Rahman’s trophy case at home includes those Oscars as well as two Grammys, a BAFTA Award, a Golden Globe and six honorary doctorates. Not bad for a musician known as one of the world’s all-time best-selling recording artists.
